Privacy Policy - Updated May 2, 2022

We respect your privacy and are committed to protecting it through our compliance with this policy. This Privacy Policy is applicable when jurisdictions require additional notice requirements and describes how Duke University and Duke’s schools, centers, institutes, and other Duke units and affiliates, including Duke Corporate Education, and Duke Health, (collectively, “we” or “Duke”) collect, use and share Personal Information that we gather by any means, including hardcopy (such as paper applications or forms) and electronic means (such as websites, mobile applications, and other digital properties), that are owned and operated by Duke and that link to or reference this Privacy Policy (collectively, the “Services”). For the purposes of this Privacy Policy, Personal Information refers to any information that can be used to identify an individual.

All Duke schools, centers, institutes, and other Duke units and affiliates may run and maintain their own websites on either the Duke.edu domain or approved organization-specific domains. These sites may carry their own privacy notices or provide additional information relating to their activities, which will supersede or supplement this Privacy Policy. For further information about Duke’s web presence, please see the Duke University Privacy Statement.

If you have any questions about this Privacy Policy or our information practices, please contact us using the options set forth in the Contact Us section.

Please read this Privacy Policy carefully. By using our Services, you consent to the information practices and other terms set forth in this Privacy Policy.

When we use the term “Personal Information,” we mean information that can be used to identify you as a person. We collect several categories of Personal Information through our Services, including information you provide, information collected automatically (potentially including location and geolocation information), and information obtained from third-party sources.

We generally use the Personal Information that we collect to operate the various functions of this institution and provide Duke Services that may be available to you.

We rely on separate and overlapping bases to process your Personal Information lawfully. By way of example, it may be necessary for us to process your Personal Information in certain ways in order to process a transaction you have requested or otherwise in accordance with a contract between us, or in certain cases we may process your Personal Information as necessary to conduct Duke’s legitimate interests, when those legitimate interests are not overridden by your rights and interests.

The ways in which we collect and use your information vary depending on the relationship between you and Duke, as well as the specific Duke function with which you interact. The following Privacy Policy sub-sections are intended to describe in more detail our collection and use practices for a number of these relationships and functions.

Website
Duke collects Personal Information you provide, for example, when you enter information into form fields on our Services. As is true of most digital platforms, we also gather certain information automatically (e.g., IP address, time spent on website, etc.) when you use our Services through various Internet technologies to manage and track use of our Services. Non-identifiable information that we collect using these technologies may be combined with Personal Information that you may voluntarily provide us when using our Services.

  • Device Information: We may collect non-personal information about the computer, mobile device, or other device you use to access Duke’s Services, such as your computer’s unique IP address, geolocation information, unique device identifiers, browser type, browser language and other transactional information.
  • Cookies, Beacons, Pixels, Local Storage and Other Similar Technologies: Duke uses “cookies,” Web beacons, HTML5 local storage, and other similar technologies. These technologies allow us to manage access to and use of our Services, recognize users and provide personalization, track user interactions of our Services, and help us to understand how users engage with Duke Services. You will not be able to access certain areas of our websites if your computer does not accept cookies from us. We do not respond to browser-based “do not track” signals.
  • Analytics Technologies: We engage with a third-party service called Google Analytics to provide us information, reports, and analysis about the usage and user browsing patterns of our Services. Google Analytics tracks and analyzes non-personally identifiable usage and volume statistical information from our visitors and customers on our websites. All data collected by Google Analytics on our behalf is owned and used by us. For more information about how Google Analytics collects data, please read their privacy policy at https://policies.google.com/privacy?hl=en.
  • Location Information: Some of our mobile applications can deliver content based on your current location if you choose to enable that feature of the application. If you enable the location-based feature, your current location will be stored locally on your device, which will then be used by the application. If you elect to have a location-based search saved to your history, we will store that information on our servers. If you do not enable the location-based service, or if an application does not offer that feature, the application will not transmit to us and we will not collect or store location information.
  • Email Tracking Pixels: Certain Duke Services may use a function in HTML emails to track which users open emails and which links they click.
  • Ads Within Our Applications: The ads you see may be targeted to you based on your current GPS location, proximity of your device to an active beacon or low-energy blue-tooth transmitter, your device’s IP address or ZIP code, and user-provided Personal Information and location data. Some mobile applications promoted through Duke websites may be links to third-party vendors. Such Services shall be governed by their own privacy policy.

For example, we and our vendors may collect:
